Journalism
Instructor: Whitehead

Journalism I CPA is geared toward students who wish to learn concepts of news, newswriting techniques, media issues, and how to manage and maintain the THS online newspaper, The Echo.

In this year-long course, students explore the difference between print, broadcast, and digital journalism; media issues such as ethics, multicultural sensitivity, privacy, accuracy, and libel; and the notion of “fake news.” Students also learn the basics of gathering information for and writing news stories, including hard- and soft-news articles, obituaries, stories on sports, campus life, profiles, and other topics. Students will explore the role of social media in news, and they will write, edit, and publish news stories, photos, videos, social media posts, polls, and breaking news banners on The Echo web site.

Students will be responsible for writing two developed hard news stories per quarter, as well as shorter soft news stories, mock news stories, and exercises in writing effective headlines, writing lead sentences, quoting, and providing attribution. Other assignments may include formative assessments such as responses to readings, surveys, projects, and Socratic seminar discussions. Classes will often focus on the process of writing news: brainstorming, drafting, revising, and editing. Instruction will focus on developing mastery of newswriting style and grammatical correctness.
